Malaga Picasso Museum

Picasso - finally among us      by Hans Seybold, "The current Spain magazine"
On October 27, thanks to the generosity of the artist's heirs, Christine Ruiz-Picasso and Bernard Ruiz-Picasso, his daughter-in-law and grandson, the Museo Picasso Malaga was born. Both had donated a part of their 1973 inherited art collection for this purpose. The museum opened its doors with a considerable number of exhibits inside: 204 works from the end of the XIX. Century to 1972. On the basis of this art treasure is not only the development of the painter, but also of the sculptor and potter follow. The donated by the daughter-in-law part consists of 133 works: 14 oil paintings, 9 sculptures, 44 drawings, 58 graphics, 7 ceramics and an additional 36 drawings of the series Royan. Picasso's grandson Bernard, for his part, is represented by a donation of 22 works: 5 oil paintings, 2 drawings, 10 prints and 5 ceramics.
In addition, there are 49 works that both heirs have shared for free for the (renewable) period of 10 years: 23 oil paintings, 2 sculptures, 7 drawings, 5 graphics and 12 ceramicsThe famous international auction house Sotheby's has the value of this collection 176 million euros estimated. This indicates the generosity of this donation, not only because of the large sum that would have made it impossible to buy, but because the majority of the work was not for sale because it is a private collection of the Picasso family. Picasso wanted to have his own museum in his native city all his life, and this Pinakothek is the realization of his dreams. It had been on ice for 50 years because of the clear refusal that the local authorities had given to his son Paolo and his daughter-in-law, classifying the art of Pablo Ruiz Picasso as "degraded". The international success of two exhibitions, organized by Christine, the wife of Picasso's first son (Picasso Clásico, 1992, and Picasso, Primera Mirada, 1994), created a favorable climate for the negotiations, which now succeeds with the opening of this great museum have been completed. Christine's suggestion that she might make a significant donation met with fertile ground at the Junta de Andalucia, which became a very active part of the project and saved no effort and expense in its realization. The Buenavista Palace, building from the XVI. Century, with Mudejar-style Renaissance ceiling paneling in all rooms, the new property is the Colección Permanente (Permanent Collection) of the most important artist of the XX. Century. To lie around the courtyard and on both floors of the building. 12 rooms where 204 works show the spirit and the evolution of the artist. A chronological biography, beginning in 1894, the year of the first work exhibited (when the young painter was only thirteen) until 1972, a year before his death.
