After Christmas in Malaga, the "Fiesta Mayor de Verdiales" always takes place on 28 December in the Parque Andrés Jiménez Díaz in the Puerto de la Torre district of Málaga. The fiesta grounds are located in Venta San Cayetano del Puerto de la Torre, just outside the city. This is a
competition between various folklore groups from the villages around Malaga. Andalusian songs are sung and danced to into the night. Each participating village receives a score from the jury, which is written down on a blackboard.
on a blackboard. It's very Andalusian here. Of course, the Malaga wine also flows freely...
Characteristics of the Verdiales:
Music: Played with guitar, violin, tambourine, castanets and lute.
Singing: High, powerful voices, often sung in alternation.
Dance: Similar to flamenco, but more spontaneous and lively.
Clothing: Eye-catching, colourful traditional costumes with flowers and ribbons.
Three main styles of the Verdiales:
Montes style - Calmer and more solemn.
Almogía style - More melodic with strong use of the violin.
Comares style - Very fast and rhythmic, often with castanets.
