In the center of Malaga and the old city there are 2 very well preserved castles. You can vistit both castles without a guide. The Alcazaba, which dates back to the time of the Moors, and the Castillo de Gibralfaro, which was also built in the Moorish period and extended after the Spanish reconquest.
The Alcazaba Royal Palace, begun in the 11th century, is the most important building of the Moorish period. Today we find in it the Archaeological Museum with numerous interesting exhibits. Sunday is free entry (no secret tip anymore).
Close to the
Alcazaba we find the Castillo de Gibralfaro. Above the original palace, which was probably built by the Phoenicians, the granadine caliph Yasuf I had the fortress built in the 14th century, which we can visit today. Two towers
are connected by a corridor with the Alcazaba. The view of Malaga and the harbor is incredibly beautiful. A tunnel leads to an elevator that leads up to the Alcazaba.
