​There are over 38 museums in Malaga. The city is slowly developing into a city of museums. And new ones are being added all the time. The historic centre of Malaga is now the city with the highest density of museums in Spain.

Picasso Museum

​The Picasso Museum Málaga (Museo Picasso Málaga) is one of the city's most important museums and a must for art lovers. It is dedicated to Pablo Picasso, who was born in Málaga in 1881.

Picasso

​📍 ​Location & History

  • ​The museum is located in the Palacio de Buenavista, a beautiful Renaissance building in the historic centre of Málaga.
  • ​It was opened in 2003 and displays an impressive collection of Picasso's works.

​🖼️ ​Highlights of the collection

  • ​Over 200 works by Picasso from various creative phases.
  • ​Paintings, drawings, sculptures and ceramics from his early works to his later experimental styles.
  • ​Works such as "Mother and Child" (1921) and "Still Life with Skull" (1946).

  • November - Februar: ​Open daily from 10.00 to 18.00 hrs
  • März - Juni: ​Open daily from 10.00 to 19.00 hrs
  • Juli - August: ​Open daily from 10.00 to 20.00 hrs
  • September - Oktober: ​Open daily from 10.00 am to 7.00 pm Clearance of the exhibition rooms begins 10 minutes before the museum closes. The evacuation of the exhibition rooms begins 10 minutes before the museum closes. Special Christmas opening hours: 24 and 31 December, and 5 January: open from 10.00 to 15.00 25 December, 1 January and 6 January: closed
  • Eintritt: ​Around €12, reduced admission for students and senior citizens. Admission is free every Sunday from 17:00!

  • ​The inner courtyard and the architecture of the palace are well worth seeing.

Picasso´s ​Birthplace

​Picasso's birthplace, the Casa Natal de Picasso, is now a museum and is located in the centre of Málaga. Pablo Picasso was born here on 25 October 1881 and spent the early years of his life here.

​Centre ​Pompidou Malaga

​The Centre Pompidou Málaga is perfect for anyone who wants to experience modern art in an impressive setting by the sea. It was opened in 2015 and displays an impressive collection of modern and contemporary art.

  • Muelle Uno, ​directly at the harbour of Málaga.
  • ​The museum is easily recognisable by the colourful glass cube ("El Cubo"), which has become the symbol of the port.

​Opening hours: 10:00 – 20:00 ​Closed on Tuesdays.
​Admission:  9 €​ for the permanent exhibition, discounts for students and senior citizens.
Admission is free on Sundays from 16:00!

  • ​The permanent exhibition includes works by Picasso, Miró, Dalí, Magritte, Chagall, Kahlo and Kandinsky.

​​​St. Petersburg Museum Malaga

​It was located in the former tobacco factory "La Tabacalera", a historic building from the 20th century. Unfortunately, the Russian Museum Málaga was closed in 2022, as the city of Málaga ended its collaboration with the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg following the outbreak of war in Ukraine. However, the building is still used for temporary exhibitions.

Interpretations ​Centre of the RomanTheaters: (C/ Alcazabilla, s/n 29015 Málaga), 
Museum of Folk Art: (Museo de Arte y Costumbres Populares; Pasillo de Santa Isabel, 10) ​is located in the centre of Malaga in a building from the 17th century. The ethnographic museum shows everyday life. Open from 10:00-13:00/16:00-19:00. Closed on Saturday afternoons and Sundays.
Diocesan Museum: {(Plaza del Obispo, 1) ​Important works of religious art, including those by Niño de Guevara and Pietro Vannuci.
Museum of Contemporary Art:{Calle Alemania) ​in the former wholesale market; was extensively remodelled. Free admission, open from 10:00-22:00; closed on Mondays.
Interactive music museum (MIMMA)(Plaza de la Marina)​ The museum is located next to/in the multi-storey car park directly at the entrance to the main shopping street Calle Larius; it houses over 300 musical instruments. Free entry
Automobil museum (Avenida Sor Teresa Prat 15) ​Newly opened museum in the old tobacco factory with an impressive collection of 90 historic cars; open from 10:00 to 19:00, closed on Mondays
Museum Carmen Thyssen(Plaza Carmen Thyssen (Calle Compania 10); ​One of the new "High Ligths" in the museum landscape of Malaga in the historic centre of Malaga with paintings of the European classics from the 13th century to the 19th century.
